‘District 9’ Interview
“When dealing with aliens, try to be polite, but firm. And always remember that a smile is cheaper than a bullet.”
Movieline interviews Neill Blomkamp

“District 9 is about two races colliding, and the city where that happens is Johannesburg. The thing of District 9 is that I’m not trying to be overly metaphorical or have any preachy lessons or any political standpoint other than I grew up in that environment, and I love science fiction, and I’m merging the two. I’m aware of the fact that for my first film I should make something that’s very much me, but shouldn’t feel to someone sitting in the movie theater that someone is preaching to them. And I think if you make a film about South Africa, you’re in danger of doing that. So I was very aware of that, that I wanted it to primarily be something unusual, something — awry is the wrong word — but unusual and compelling, and then after that, you can start weaving in the fabric of apartheid and South African history into it.”

“Alive in Joburg”

Neill Blomkamp’s short film from 2005 which was the basis of District 9, also has the lead actor from District 9.  If you haven’t seen District 9 yet, its basically like this short film with way bigger budget, better fx, better camera work, and more intricate storyline.

Just finished watching District 9.  First off, I find it really awesome that all the marketing for this movie never really tells us what the actual plot is about.  There is actually a really strong story running through this movie.  If you’ve seen the Halo shorts, you’ll recognize this director’s realistic style on the front lines of battle. That docuaction camera work is prevalent throughout the film, but the 2nd half gets a bit more hollywood zing as it turns into a gripping narrative.  The acting is very believable and made me cringe and gasp at all the right moments.  Kind of hard writing about this without giving any of it away, but let’s just say if you like sci-fi at all, YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS MOVIE.
